20 Myths About Upvc Replacement Door Handles: Dispelled

UPVC Replacement Door Handles

Over time the handles on your doors will get worn out and need to be changed. It is crucial to keep the same dimensions as the handles you have previously replaced when replacing them.

The three measurements to be inspected are the top screw's location, lever and key hole sizes. Use the size guide to aid you.

Inline Lever/Lever

A lever door handle is a contemporary handle that can be put in on replacement or new doors. This kind door handle is offered in a wide range of styles & finishes. A number of manufacturers offer this type of handle, including Avocet ERA, Fullex, Hoppe, Mila, Millenco & Yale.

Fab and Fix Windsor Inline Sprung Lever Door Handle

The door handles of uPVC/Composite are constructed of durable materials and are suitable for multi-point lock doors which require a robust design. The handles are inline and they utilize the same screws and spindle to secure them. They are easily fitted on new or existing uPVC/Composite door.

The handle can be adjusted and angled to fit the needs of all users. The handle has been tested to 200,000 cycles. This ensures that the quality of finish and performance will last for a long time. The sprung lever is adjustable to fit a wide range of locks. This is useful for narrower doors where the cylinder is further away from the door. A shortened lever is also a good choice for doors that have latches that can be operated by a thumb turn located on the inside.

Lever Pad

A Lever Pad door handle made of upvc operates differently than lever handles found on most doors. These handles are operated by one spindle, or two spindles, either inline or offset. They are typically utilized on UPVC doors with double glazing. They come in a range of finishes and variations.

The handles have been tested to at least 200 000 cycles and are available in several finishes including White and Silver, as well as Chrome & Gold. The finish is compliant with BS EN 1670:2007 Grade 5 and is also resistant to corrosion, thereby giving the handle a high degree of durability and performance for its intended use.

All of the UPVC handle lever pad styles come with a spindle and screws which allow them to be put on a new or existing uPVC door. The 211mm backplate fixation centres permit a larger handle, which is often a benefit when replacing a damaged or old multi-point door lock mechanism. These handle levers are also sprung, solving the problem of handles that slide from their horizontal position when they are not in use.

It is important to match up the PZ dimensions of both the multipoint lock as well as the uPVC doors when selecting the replacement UPVC spindle and handle. This measurement may also be referred to as 'handle centres or cylinder centre'. It is important for matching the correct handles.

Once  upvc door handles  have the proper PZ size you will then need to ensure that the lever pads and push pads are in a appropriate shape to accommodate the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant handles that you require for your doors. These are typically of a round or square design with an internal lever and an external push pad.

Most of the UPVC lever pads that we offer are sprung, which means that they will return to their horizontal position after not being used, instead of hanging out and potentially sticking in the frame. This helps prevent the draughts and cold air from entering a property. The majority of UPVC lever pad style handles are available in left and right handed versions that allow them to be installed on either side of doors.

Euro Cylinder

Cylinder locks are found on uPVC and other types of doors. Cylinder locks are operated by a key which unlocks the cylinder case. This exposes pins that can be aligned with those inside the lock and allow them to turn the camera that rotates, opening the door. Euro Cylinders are available with up to six pins. Internal and external doors require different levels of security.

The choice of the correct cylinder is vitally important; this depends on how your doors and handles are utilized. For example, external doors should be fitted with a higher security cylinder, whilst internal doors can be secured using the standard cylinder. Certain cylinders come with extra features that increase security, like anti-drill or anti bump properties.

To make sure that the euro cylinder is the correct size for your door, it must be measured correctly. The cylinder must be measured from the central screw hole to the ends of the cylinder. This includes the thumb turn if there is one. If you cannot measure using the lock in a fixed position, you can take it out of it. A cylinder that protrudes beyond the handle and escutcheon might be vulnerable to attacks such as lock snapping, so it is important that it is not too long.

The design of many modern cylinders includes anti-drilling and bump resistance features. They are designed to decrease attacks by forcing cylinders to rotate in a new direction. This will help to deflect an attack and keep your door safe.

Certain cylinders are made to resist snapping. This is an increasingly common type of attack on cylinders which is where the break line of the lock is attacked using a special tool to snap off the front of the cylinder to allow the door to be opened. This is a quicker and simpler method to gain access than through a multipoint locking system. It also leaves less evidence of the burglary which could hinder insurance claims.

Spring Cassette

The spring cassette is located in the base of the door handle backplate, supplying a spring-loaded solution and returning the multipoint lock handles back to their original position after usage. The handles were previously equipped with no spring and would droop when the locking mechanism was disengaged. Adding this simple component is among the most effective ways to fix this and it is also an excellent way to stop your upvc doors from getting stuck in an open or closed position, as they aren't always simple to manually close by hand.

These spring cassettes are specifically made for use with sprung multipoint locks, they will not fit multipoint handles that are not sprung and you must have a custom hole cut into your backplate to allow these to fit (please see image for technical diagram). These cassettes are a replacement to broken or missing cassettes on the backplate of uPVC door handles. They are supplied in a single unit. They feature a square cut out that can accommodate an 8mm shaft.

These spring cassettes provide a great value solution to the issue of door handles that have become sagging. They are simple to install and will extend the life span of your uPVC doors.
